Keep your tea or coffee warm this winter with one of these simple-to-knit cozies! The beginner-friendly pattern contains instructions for both a French Press cozy and a Teapot cozy. For the French Press cozy, you only need to know how to cast on, knit, and bind off. The Teapot cozy requires purling and some simple decreases. Both are knit flat and the tea cozy requires only minimal seaming.
You will need 5 mm / US 8 needles to make either cozy. The tea cozy is easiest on a 60 – 80cm circular needle; for the coffee cozy you could use straight needles. For the coffee cozy, you will also want a 3 cm button – we recommend one of our Multicolour Wooden Buttons or Coffee buttons. Don’t forget a sewing needle to weave in your yarn ends!
Both cozies can be knit from one skein (112g/4oz) of heavy worsted weight yarn (single colour options). If you use two colours, as shown in the photograpghs, you’ll be able to mix and match the main colour and contrasting colour and make 4 different, but related, cozies from 2 skeins.
We recommend Custom Woolen Mills 2 ply, a rustic 100% Canadian wool yarn, and Cascade Melilla, a wool/silk blend yarn that gradually shifts colours. Another great option would be Sweet Fleece (note: this yarn comes in smaller balls – 1 ball will make 1 cozy with some left-over).
These cozies make great gifts – add a packet of your favourite tea or coffee and your friends will remember you each time they take a sip.
